    Abner Francis Xaviour

    School of Engineering

Brought up from a humble beginning in a family of five, Abner was taught that we can achieve more and be successful if we remain modest and respectful. He believes humility is the most shining jewel in a leader's crown. Despite achieving a First Class Honors Bachelor's degree in Communication and Electronic Engineering from University of Northumbria Newcastle (UNN), UK in 2009, Abner never took pride and has instead been grateful to his lecturers at UOW Malaysia KDU for his academic success.

Apart from humility, integrity is the other core value that matters to him. He says, "I admire people who do not compromise integrity on their journey to success". With technology these days, plagiarism and academic integrity is a growing concern. However Abner feels UNN's engineering program is designed to encourage creativity and critical thinking which gives little room for such abuse. He recollects designing an intelligent parking system and also a liver cancer detection tool using Matlab as part of his final thesis which challenged his engineering acumen.

Abner who has worked with several leading multinational corporations, is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). He has successfully implemented projects relating to Human Resource, Finance Services, Information Systems (SAP), Quality Control & Audits, Service Management, knowledge Management and Environment, Health & Safety among others. Throughout his career so far, Abner has been fortunate to work with many reputable leaders and observed that only the honest and sincere ones excel.

From this course, I learned the fundamentals of running my own business as well as the mentality in being a leader. Anyone can start their own business, but without necessary leadership knowledge you will find yourself in a losing game. In my experience, this course was very different in a way that encourages us to think and be our individual selves, while learning skills to adapt to change or trends in this technological era. Besides that, I was exposed to a design-thinking perspective which plays an important role in problem solving. Currently, I am learning a new language and self-improving my interpersonal communication skills working as a freelancer.
