Course Overview

The Master of General Surgery programme is a 4-year full-time clinical training programme. It is aimed at progressive mastery of knowledge, clinical skills, increasing responsibilities and independence in the management of surgical diseases, to qualify as a general surgeon. The programme recognizes the importance of acquiring the appropriate surgical skills in general surgey practice. The programme is conducted with collaboration from the Department of Surgery, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia  Medical Center (UKMMC).  Candidates will be trained at accredited KPJ Hospitals and Department of Surgery UKMMC on alternate years: 1st and 3rd year at KPJ Specialist Hospitals, 2nd and 4th year at UKMMC (a total of 2 years in KPJ Specialist Hospitals and 2 years in UKMMC). This programme follows the same curriculum as other Master of General Surgery programmes in the country. At the end of the 4 years training, trainees will sit the common Master of General Surgery Final Examination conducted by the Malaysian Specialty Committee in General Surgery. This programme undergoes all the accreditation processes as prescribed by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

The programme follows the general standards set by the Malaysian Qualification Agency,  Malaysian Medical Council and the National Curriculum for General Surgery.

This is a full-time 4 years clinical training programme.

All candidates accepted into this programme will be appointed as Registrars (trainee Medical Officers) at one of the KPJ Specialist Hospital (the base hospital) throughout the course. Currently, Master of General Surgery is conducted at KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital, KPJ Puteri Specialist Hospital and Department of Surgery,UKM Medical Center. Registrars will receive a monthly RM 5,000 cost-of-living allowance from KPJ hospital. Registrars have to serve at the Emergency Department of the hospital (base hospital) for 48 hours a month (about 7 sessions per month). The rest of the time, candidates are rotated to accredited KPJ Specialist hospitals and UKM Medical Center to undergo training in general surgery. 

In the first and third years, candidates undergo a 3 to 6 monthly rotation at KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital and KPJ Puteri Specialist Hospital. At each hospital, candidate will perform clinical duties as a registrar at the surgery clinic of a senior surgery consultant. The hallmark of this training programme is “one-to-one” apprenticeship training, where each candidate will perform clinical duties with a senior surgery consultant at the clinic, ward and in the operating room. The consultant provides close supervision and immediate feedback to candidates.

Candidates sit and must pass the Part 1 Master of General Surgery examination conducted by Department of Surgery,UKMMC within the first 2 years.

Candidates are posted to the Department of Surgery UKMMC in Year 2 and Year 4. They undergo sub-specialty postings together with other UKM candidates. Candidates are to write 10 case-writeups and encouraged to send articles for journal publication. Candidates are also required to conduct research and the research-work must be submitted as a dissertation 6 months before the final examination. Candidates will sit for the final National Conjoint Board of Surgery examination conducted at public universities. After passing the final examination and fulfil all the training requirements, candidates will be awarded Master of General Surgery, KPJ Healthcare University .

University / Conjoint Board of Radiology Criteria :

  •  Possess a Medical Degree (MD, MBBS, and MBChB) or equivalent qualifications from Universities recognized by the Senate of the University;
  • Must be registered for medical practice by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and possess a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC);
  • At least two (2) years of clinical training/ practice after they have obtained their Medical Degrees and completed the housemanship;
  • Sits for the written screening examination;
  • Performance at interview;
  • Any other criteria deemed suitable by the Senate
