First City UC Students Celebrates The Power Of Innovation

The Innovation Day event was graced by First City UC’s Director, Y Bhg Prof Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mak Chai, Chief Operating Officer, Ms Yeong Yin Cheng, Dean Faculty of Engineering & Computing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Christine Lee, faculty staff, potential employers, industry partners, events sponsors, members of the media and students.
The fifty most inventive projects were displayed at the multipurpose hall of First City UC. It included the finest projects from students pursuing their final year BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and BSc (Hons) Software Engineering programmes. Selected projects from students who are studying the Diploma in Information Technology programme were also showcased, as the university college continued to celebrate the power of innovation in these future engineers, programmers and IT specialists.
The annual Innovation Day is organised every year as it served as a platform for the students to connect with the industry, potential employers and partners who have longstanding relationships with the institution. The projects on displayed during the event exhibition often impress the industry partners that some of the students even received offers of employment on the spot.
“It is a good platform for me to expose my project and anticipate for a job offer,” said Alice Foo Qian Hui, a final year student from the BA (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering programme.
The attendees were enticed with a warm welcome by the Performing Arts Club of First City UC. The group dancers of ten students livened up the mood in the event and brought the atmosphere in the hall to another level. The welcome speech was presented by the Vice-Chancellor of First City UC and was followed by the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Computing department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Christine Lee.
“External education is important for the students as it exposes them to the real world, it’s a way to be able to train students what to look forward in the industry,” said the Director of First City UC, Tan Sri Dato’ Teo Chiang Liang.
The event featured an interesting talk on “Challenges Faced by the Engineering Profession in an Open Market Economy.” by Ir Rocky Wong, a special guest from the Board of Engineers Malaysia. He imparted his knowledge and experiences on Engineering and how students could overcome and be able to manage challenges that they will be facing in the career line.
He encouraged students who have graduated as engineers to register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia. “Cross borders certifications begins from domestic registration,” said, Ir. Rocky Wong.
Some of students’ projects were Design of a Climbing Robot, OOTD - Social Fashion Platform with Augmented Reality, Indoor Positioning System using Wi-Fi Localization Technique, Eye of Horus - An Application of Face Recognition & Steganography and Performance Evaluation of Various Modulation Techniques for Light Fidelity (LiFi).
Winners were chosen through 70% professional assessment and 30% voting process, which was carried out through an online survey.
Cash prizes were rewarded to the three best projects, in a move by the faculty to boost motivation and provide encouragement to the students to continue producing and creating more innovative projects in the future.
First City UC constantly works with collaborative partners in relevant digital industries such as IBM Malaysia and Google Malaysia to enhance its students’ learning experience. As the Faculty continues innovating itself to keep up with industry’s demands, there will be more new programmes offered for students who wish to pursue careers in Engineering and Information Technology, particularly in Mechanical, Mobile Computing, Networking and Security.
Bachelor’s degree graduates can progress to further pursue a Master programme in Software Engineering under the faculty of Engineering and Computing at First City UC with its value-for-money education as well as financial incentives and assistance in the form of scholarships, incentives and attractive discounts. The various types of scholarships offered are such as; Teo Soo Cheng Foundation Scholarship, Merit Scholarship, Sports Scholarship, UEC Scholarship, Student Leader and Top Office Bearer Scholarship and Sibling Incentive.
